Norma, 80
The pain started in 80-year-old Norma’s right hip and left ankle, making it difficult to walk. Due to a fracture in 2014, the ankle pain bothered her most in the mornings. It even affected her balance, making it difficult for her to walk for long periods of time.
Norma decided to seek help from her primary care physician, who suggested that physical therapy would be a good option for her discomfort. After several sessions, Norma was unable to continue with her prescribed physical therapy, leaving her to feel alone in dealing with her pain.
Then Norma checked her mail, and “I received something from TailorCare explaining how they could help with my pain. I was excited about the idea that someone could help.” Norma called TailorCare and was connected to a Clinical Navigator, a physical therapist.
After completing a thorough assessment over the phone and discussing different treatment options with her Clinical Navigator, Norma decided that trying physical therapy again would be a good choice. Listening to her concerns, her Clinical Navigator understood that it would be difficult for Norma to drive to a physical therapy clinic. Much to Norma’s delight, her Clinical Navigator found a physical therapist who would visit her at home.
The physical therapist worked on Norma’s strength and balance. They “pushed me to do things I didn’t even think I could do!” Many exercises focused on building up the strength in her legs, which benefited her balance and walking. When her physical therapist was not at her home, Norma worked on a home exercise program that she completed daily.
Norma is now feeling more robust, able to walk without pain, and feels better. “Talking to my Clinical Navigator was so lovely. He was knowledgeable, understood my situation, and was a kind man. I looked forward to speaking with him.”
